During the 1861-1865 War Between the States, hundreds of thousands of longhorn cattle multiplied across the untended lands of Texas. When the state’s Confederate soldiers returned after the war, they recognized that the market for this vast host of beeves lay in the wealthy North and its teeming millions of immigrants. These tough cowboys blazed the Chisholm Trail, named for half-white, half-Cherokee frontiersman Jesse Chisholm who pioneered it. Between 1867 and 1877, more than 5 million cattle rumbled up the greatest overland stock route in history to railheads in Kansas, for shipment east and north, to feed a hungry and growing nation. The Chisholm Trail ran straight through Waukomis’s modern day Main Street.
